The Fringe Dwellers

1h 34m Drama, Australia, Australian 1986

The story of an First Nations family that tries to move out of the fringe and into the white community.

From director Bruce Beresford, comes this gentle yet compelling film about the difficulties of being a person who truly belongs in no world but their own. Trilby is a First Nations teenager living in a shantytown with her extended family who are divided between those more assimilated to the white world, and an older generation still attuned to the mythology of their culture. Trilby persuades her mother to move into a prosperous white neighbourhood, but with the white locals expressing distaste for their new neighbours and Trilby’s relationship with her boyfriend, Phil, resulting in an unwanted pregnancy, things are definitely not turning out how Trilby had imagined.
